Libra (Sept 23 - Oct 22):
Happy Birthday, Libra! Moments before your birth, you were the single most important living creature in the room. The nurses, doctors, and your parents had all their focus on you and your next move, as you made your way centimeter by centimeter into the world. After your arrival, you held your parents’ attention until you took your first breath, let out your first cry, your first words, took your first steps, and so on. You were, and possibly still are, the most important person to many - and this is without you ever promising them anything, without you even knowing your role in the world. This week, scientist announced the single most important creature in the world. Sadly, it wasn’t you. It was the bee. Why the bee? Aside from the fact that they add gorgeous color to our world, human survival is dependent on them for pollination, for our food source; bees know their role in life. And they are loyal to it. They are the ultimate public servant. Humans like doing a good deed on occasion, volunteering here and there, or sacrificing some time or money to someone or some cause if it doesn’t disrupt their life. On the other hand, the bee will do everything in its power to find a food or water source, share this knowledge with their bee-buddies, get back safely to the hive, and place her own life at risk for the Queen/the greater good. In the last three months of this year, the birthday gift I ask you to give yourself, is to be like a bee - give the gift of you. How? By finding out what your role is in your community. By being less about “me, me, me,” you actually get to be more about YOU. You’ll find out what your awesome talents are and share them. Maybe you can tutor someone in fractions? Or help an elderly person with tech stuff? Think of your talents as an untapped food source for the bees. Convert your “me, me, me,” to “bee, bee, bee” and set out to pollinate others with what you have to offer!
Scorpio (Oct 23 - Nov 21):
The latest model of cars now have a “Lane Departure” feature built in. This technology can sense when the car has drifted outside of its current lane. It gently shakes the car side to side, cautioning the driver that the car is off its path. It can be a life saver. It keeps us alert, but never fully corrects the drift. If it did, the driver would become dependent on it and not take responsibility. It will also do the shake if the driver intentionally changes lanes, but fails to use the signal. Don’t you wish everyone had a gentle shake built within themselves to notify them when their lives begin to veer of course? We actually do. Its referred to as the little voice in your head, intuition, or a sudden epiphany. Scorpio, your inner “Lane Departure” is so strong that you adjust direction long before it gently shakes you. That’s why you don’t understand those swerving all over the place. Unfortunately, those you are worried about don’t have a fine-tuned inner “Lane Departure.” In turn, you have become their “gentle shaker” trying to get them back into their appropriate lane. No matter how much you shake them, they are the principal driver and they can override your shake. You and I can see how this may result in devastation. I advise you to continue to shake, gently, and then release. Remember, some times the lane change is intentional - the driver wants to be in that lane, it’s their destiny, whether you want them to be there or not. All you can do is remind them of the safer path. In the coming months, as they haphazardly cross lanes, it’s very important you don’t grab the wheel. If you do, you can be dragged across lanes and over a cliff. Scorpio, we don’t need another Thelma & Louise! Remember: Gently shake, release.
Sagittarius (Nov 22 - Dec 21):
A famous psychoanalyst once said, “A dream not interpreted is like a letter not opened.” Sagittarius, you have perfected the art of daydreaming. On the other hand, your sleep cycle has been on a rollercoaster. Your mind has not calmed enough to whisk you away into dreamland. When it has, you awaken in a haze and spend little to no time recalling your dreams. Those dreams are speaking to you. As the days become shorter, the nights longer, the sky darker, take these environmental cues as time to relax and replenish the mind. Close your eyes to the events of the day and prepare yourself for your sleep-state. Envision your brain softening, like a dried sponge receiving water, opening, expanding. Let is become porous, so that thoughts and dreams can freely flow in, around, and out, without any direction from you (unlike in your daydream-state). Whether you wake an hour later or eight hours later, recall the dream - even if you can only catch a glimpse of it. What did you see - a color, a person, a landscape? What did you feel - fear, tranquility, motivation? Use all your senses to explore the dream. Write down the first thoughts that come to mind. Pay close attention to your dreams during the weeks leading to your birthday. Your subconscious is begging to be reeled into your conscious, to be analyzed, read, and understood. The more you do this, your daydreams will become more concrete (with purpose) and your entire understanding & approach to reality will shift.
Capricorn (Dec 22 - Jan 19):
It’s difficult having trust these day - with politics, people’s intentions, with what and who to believe. I see you, looking around and no longer recognizing people you once knew so well. Overall, people think that we can not and should not trust one another. Even though we think it’s a deep-rooted feeling, its actually a superficial belief that we don’t trust others. Every day we have and show trust: we trust that drivers will stop at a red light not to ram us; we trust that the packaged almonds are not laced with poison; we trust the payroll lady to get her job done and process our check. Have others been untrustworthy? Yes! But, Capricorn, they were untrustworthy all along. You knew that! So it wasn’t as if they moved out of character and that’s why you were let down. I ask you to adopt the following: Trust, until you have been given a reason not to do so. Rather than your old approach of: Trust must be earned. Use October to make a mental note on all that you trust in others. You will find that the list of trust will far outweigh the untrustworthy list. Then make a list of what you trust about yourself. Perhaps it’s your gut instinct about shady people. If so, then you shouldn’t fret about being used and abused. By releasing the notion that the world and it’s people are only out for themselves, you will begin to enjoy the vast trustworthy offerings of many. Trust me on this one!
Aquarius (Jan 20 - Feb 18):
A drop of water placed at the top of The Mississippi River will take 90 days to travel to its destination: The Gulf of Mexico. Even water, going with the flow, is at the mercy of time, space, & distance. There are roughly 90 days left in 2019. I want you to envision yourself as a drop of water. You already know where you’re going, or at the least, where you’d like to be. In your water bubble, you carry the seed to a new beginning, new ventures, new visions of how 2020 will unfold. Whether it’s a specific goal you wish to attain or a new perspective you’d like to develop, you are at the seedling stage. Yes, I know you thought you were further along. In 90 days, the seed will be planted and quickly take root. However, it will still take more time (more than you would like) to begin to grow. For the remainder of the year, continue to float, nourishing your body with good stuff. I’m not talking just fruits, veggies, exercise. I’m talking about surrounding yourself with kindred spirits that will ease the way. Remember, even though you are going with the flow, The Mississippi has countless twist, turns, curves and narrow passages along the way. Be prepared for a few bruises. Nothing that an Aquarius can’t overcome. The true test, or keyword, in this navigation toward your goal is … patience. But I guarantee you, it will be worth the wait. Your destination isn’t going anywhere. It’s looking forward to your arrival - at the right time, in the right way.
Pisces (Feb 19 - March 20):
Famed author, Elizabeth Gilbert, recounted visiting De Ceuvel, Netherelands, where an 80-year-old shipyard contaminated the land with heavy metals and chemicals. Brave and ingenious Hollanders began building a boardwalk above the toxic environment. And on the boardwalk they built a mini city. The ingenious part came about when they planted bamboo, hemp and weeping willow trees to pull and filter toxins from the soil - making the toxins disappear. How? I don’t know! But, you remind me of the weeping willow. Take a minute to think about the facts and symbolism of this story, and the known ability of the willow to bend. Pisces you are much like the willow, as you bend low to offer shade & empathy to others. This is an incredible quality to have. However, like in Gilbert’s story of not knowing where the toxins go once the willow does the toxic uptake, we need to ask what happens to the Pisces when they take on the mood of others? What occurs physically & mentally within a Pisces when they take on problems, toxins, dilemmas of others? Pisces, you will always have others in your circle with financial woes, aches and pains, mental frustrations. It’s not your job to bend all the way down and soak up their worries. Your natural tendency is to do so. Unless you know exactly how you will process this energy, consider limiting your empathetic ways. It is okay, and actually better, to draw boundaries. You have one task for the remainder of the year: drawing boundaries.
Aries (March 21 - April 19):
I read that the 500 most common words in the English language have over 14,000 definitions attributed to them. No wonder there is so much miscommunication in the world! Aries, I ask that you watch your words and the meanings you have assigned to your vocabulary. But more importantly, I ask that you be open to the different meanings that others have assigned to these common words. It is quite possible that the friction you are feeling with others is simply a miscommunication on a few choice words. Are you open enough to allow some flexibility, maybe even some moderate elasticity, in another’s interpretation of your opinions, conversations, or commands? Try it. As the holidays approach, and text, phone calls, and plans are exchanged, you will need this new strategy in communication. Why can’t the “others” be the ones that are open? Because you’re the Aries; the one that likes an adventure. Consider this an adventure. And there’s benefit to it. If you do this, you will sail through the next three months unscathed over petty misunderstandings. You will bring light to the holiday season, and in that, others will begin to adopt the definitions you’ve assigned to common, but important, words in your life. Think of it as practicing reverse psychology. And who doesn’t like to play psychologist every now and then?
Taurus (April 20 - May 20):
I have been thinking of Lord Ganesha so often that I’ve been scouring the web and phonetically reciting sanskrit prayers. I even went so far as to order a set of Ganesha Oracle Cards. When one card wouldn’t peel off of another card, I immediately knew it was a card for you. Ganesha is the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences, who sits quietly, patiently, waiting to be called upon. Taurus, with your bull head, and Ganesha with his elephant face, it appears you’re at an equal standoff. But you’re not. Dear Taurus, Ganesh is your perfect match for a symbiotic relationship. The card I pulled for you had the word “SUSTENANCE” written on it. You currently have enough - enough food, shelter, friends, and love. However, there is another level of “sustenance” that comes from creating, growing, and evolving. It is extremely important that you not only acknowledge your creative side, but feed it. If this means waking an hour earlier to paint, write, garden, or whip up a new gourmet dish, do so! You have to think of this action as putting on a life vest. Creativity keeps you afloat. Ignoring your creative fire will only expand to eventually burn you. To keep the fire in control, kindle it. To do this: take a class, create a class, whether you’re the teacher, the student, or both, whether you’re alone or with others, dive in. Praying or speaking to Ganesha is optional, but know that he is there at any given time to lend a big elephant ear. I leave you with this quote by Kurt Vonnegut, “Practice any art … no mater how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what’s inside you, to make your soul grow.” P.S. I’d love to hear about the experience becoming part!
Gemini (May 21 - June 20):
What? It’s fall already? It’s your time of year Gemini! Time to pull out the sweaters and boots. Unlike bears, that hibernate, you do the opposite, you estivate. Estivation is a state of dormancy during hot or dry periods. You have “slept” through summer. Now that the heat is passing you’re starting to open your eyes. It’s time to WAKE UP - to fall, to reality, to the coming months. You are going to be busy, busy, busy as the months head into winter. This is the perfect time to pull out your calendar and jot down the essentials of what must get done. If you thought summer passed fast while you were sleepwalking through it, fall and winter are going to pass with lightning speed. But since you are a master juggler, I want you to get even busier. I’m adding to your To Do list for the next three months. If you add these elements created by Brittin Oakman into your crazy schedule, you are more likely to accomplish all 1001 task you need to check off. Here you go: Get busy taking deep BREATHS, SILENCING irrational thoughts, CALMING a racing heart, telling yourself YOU’RE OK. Print out the below graphic and read it to yourself each morning as you race out the door.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22):
Do you believe in unicorns? Have you been wishing for one to come trotting out of an enchanted forest to confirm miracles can happen? Well, Cancer, you aren't the only one. The unicorn craze appears to be at its height. The need to believe in some mythical creature, to believe that there is something more, something better, something miraculous, has left me perplexed. Let me state it bluntly: You don’t have access to a unicorn. But what you do have access to is a universe already filled with miracles and down-right-magic. And it’s yours for the taking. Take a look around: that massive tree was once a seed; that sun rising in the east will not fall out of the sky; without any thought or input from you, your lungs will take about 20,000 breaths today. What does this have to do with miracles? Everything. All these miracles exist, naturally, giving you free time to focus your energy not on unicorns, but on the goal you are striving for. For the month of October, I want you to stop each day, close your eyes, take 10 deep meaningful breaths (you have 20,000 more in the day to waste) and visualize yourself in your “miracle;” in your “dream-come-true.” And say this to yourself, “I am a miracle and like attracts like.” For bonus credit, when you’re out and about, point out all the miracles you see - they’ll see you, too. Then, watch how serendipity starts weaving together everything you need!
Leo (July 23-Aug 22):
In October of 1940 the 40 hour-work-week, part of the Fair Labor Standard Act of 1938, went into effect. Prior to this, it was “normal” for people to work 10-16 hours per day, six days a week. The demand on workers was, well, demanding. Then came 8-hour work days, six days a week. Thanks to Henry Ford, he found that his workers proved to be far more productive working 40 hours over 48 hours per week. Research continues to show that there is no benefit working beyond 40 hours. Workers who regularly work OT are more likely to gain weight, become ill, are less alert and ultimately, not produce good work. The 40 hour work week benefits the employer (with quality productivity) and the employee (with work/life balance). Yet, Americans love to put in extra hours, earn extra income, brag about the number of hours worked, then drag themselves out of bed and walk through the week needing caffeine to keep up, and complain that there’s no work-life balance. WHY? Leo, why are you part of this nonsense? You, who prides yourself on research and statistics has fallen prey to the workload. Not only are you not seeing the toll it’s taking on your health, as you blindly open another file to work on, you’re not seeing the toll it takes on your loved ones. They want you present, in body and mind. Believe me, you have far more interesting things to offer than a rundown of your 70-hour workweek and a runned-down version of yourself. As the holidays approach: take time out to carve a pumpkin, brine a turkey, and put thought into simple holiday giving. You just may enjoy watching others scramble through the holidays, working overtime, unproductively. And you will definitely enjoy a more productive version of yourself and your work each time you return to the drawing board.
Virgo (Aug 23 - Sept 22):
Rejection is tough, especially in today’s era of social media. This is because people tend to post the bright, the glorious & victorious, or straight up juicy gossip and drama. But they rarely post the rejection - whether it be a rejection about an idea, a project, a proposal, or an invitation. As a writer, I get rejected monthly with my writing submissions and/or blog posts. The majority of what I write, will be read once by a stranger, editor (or intern) of a magazine, and then rejected. Or possibly, never read by anyone other than me. Ever. We have to selectively decide which “baby” to submit to editors for critique, review, and more often than not, rejection. Are you feeling rejected by some aspect of your environment, circle of friends, or by the world at large? One thing I have started doing is celebrating those rejections. Yes! As in raising a glass to it and saying “Cheers! I just got rejected, again!” On my Instagram account, I have posted harsh reviews, criticism, and rejection letters. And guess what? Most people say “Thank you for doing that.” Most people are in the same boat. It feels so good showing others that rejection is part of the process (see pic below of my latest post). It’s made me less afraid of the next rejection. There are two things I want you to think about, Virgo: 1) With your next fail or rejection, know that you’re one step closer to a “yes.” 2) Remember, with each rejection it means you’re actually trying. Most people never try. So get out there and try. Get rejected. Here are some ideas on how to celebrate your rejections: Raise a glass of bubbly to yourself in the mirror; write a letter to Rejection, thanking them; FaceTime your BFF and in the most overly dramatic way reenact how the person rejected you, and have a great laugh. Then wipe the tears away and go try again! You can only get to sweet success through a thorny field of rejection.
